This happened to me 2 weeks ago. I think the cost is very minimal for more storage. You could also either delete some pictures or export older posts to your hard drive and then delete them. Go to the settings tab then export.
It annoyed me enough that I switched my blog over to Word Press (fourmorans.wordpress.com). Word Press offers 3 times as much storage before they make you pay. It's a big job to switch though.
